The Key to a Great Relationship? Great Sex!

Friday, 5 February 2010 12:32 by elenamauer

As the East coast prepares for a snowbound weekend, Joselin and I are recovering from a party to celebrate the launch of our latest book, Have Sex Like You Just Met... No Matter How Long You've Been Together. We're calling this "every girls' guide to a sexy and satisfying relationship" because we wholeheartedly believe that the intimacy you share with your guy is the glue that keeps you together. Having great sex keeps you connected, makes your life together exciting and fun, keeps you from becoming like roommates--and it helps you stay in a good mood so you can resist the urge to claw his eyes out the next time he forgets to put his beer bottle in the recycle bin. All around win.

We had an amazing host for our partay, the lovely Judith Steinhart, who has an equally lovely home. And we were surrounded by friends and industry peeps who cheered us on as we read some of our advice straight from the pages of the book. An awesome time all around.

Have Sex Like You Just Met is sort of a continuation of The Good Girl's Guide To Living In Sin. It's full of advice from real women and experts about igniting the flames of passion in a long term relationship. You've been together with your guy a long time, and you're looking to spice things up? We encourage you to check it out!

It also makes a great Valentine's Day gift. Just sayin'!

The Columbus Tour

Monday, 1 September 2008 15:55 by elenamauer

Okay, here's what I always envisioned as a "book tour:" Fancy hotels, expense accounts big enough for a steak dinner every night, adoring fans who flock to your signings, a hair and makeup team--and, well, you just have to show up and let the awesome book you just wrote speak for itself.

Not so for us first-time authors who are still climbing up the ladder. LA trip aside, if we were going to get a "book tour," we were going to have to make it happen ourselves. But, luckily we had the help of Joselin's sister, the amazing Hilary Griffith, a PR guru in Columbus, Ohio (Joselin's hometown). Hilary worked her contacts and got us a spot on the local morning show, Good Day Columbus. We were pumped--the biggest city in Ohio and we were going to be its stars!

Well, let's just say, the trip started off on a less-than-glamourous note. I spent about 14 hours in the Newark airport trying to get on a plane (because of a 1 hour storm. What's up?) before actually getting to the great state of Ohio (and sadly, missing the spa day we'd planned). And Joselin discovered she was missing a main component of her planned TV outfit because of a minor dry cleaning fiasco. You should have seen us in Target (the only store open on Sunday night in Columbus) trying to find a replacement cardigan. Luckily, Joselin thought up a plan C and we amped up for our appearance.

Monday morning arrived quickly and after a quick stop for some much needed McDonald's coffee, we made it in perfect time (7:30 am) to the Fox 28 studio. We were led to a break room by the production assistant, who then told us he'd be back in 15 minutes to usher us to the set for the interview. Inside, I freaked out a little. "So, what exactly are we going to be talking about?" I asked him. Yep, that's right. They were just going to throw us on set without any prep. Is that what you would have envisioned? Me neither. Hey, we wrote a book on this stuff--we know it. But I like to be at least a little prepared. He rattled off a few things from his notes and left the room.

15 minutes (and a little brushing up on the book's content) later, we were on set, putting on microphones and being told we'd be on the air in 10 seconds...

...in all, we think it went well. There were a few "Oh we shoulda said..."s in there. And I wish we'd been asked a better variety of questions. But we were happy about it--especially, that they kept mentioning The Good Girl's Guide To Living In Sin throughout the show!

That night we had a book signing at Barnes & Noble right next to the Ohio State campus. We got a bit lost getting there--Joselin says the city has changed a lot since her days there--but luckily Midwesterners are nice and we got some quick directions. Being late to your own book signing really isn't cool. It was a good turnout considering there were no classes in session, and some of Joselin's former high school teachers even showed up. Fun stuff. Afterwards, we celebrated with some of Joselin's old friends at a local watering hole. We really felt accomplished after one busy day!

On Tuesday, we had a little time to kill, so we headed to the Ohio State Fair. It was a big lesson in things Midwestern for me--sculptures made of cheese, cow milking, log rolling (I never knew what this was before) and even a giant Smoky the Bear that spoke (and, I think, was trying to hit on us...)

After a quick shower, we were back in a bookstore, this time, a B&N in the posh neighborhood of Easton. We got there early this time, but realized there had been a bit of a miscommunication... the manager on duty thought there'd only be one author and that we weren't doing a reading. She'd just set up a small table for signing near the door, and we anticipated a big crowd from Joselin's family and friends alone so that just wouldn't do! I was a bit worried that we wouldn't get it all together in time, considering I had to hop a flight at 8 pm--and it was already 6. But we kicked it in to high gear. Joselin distracted her peeps--and I helped the store staff move chairs to create a discussion area upstairs. We got it done and it was a successful event! While Joselin did more distracting, I signed all the store's copies of books and sneaked out a bit early in order to catch my plane. There'd be no hanging out in airports on my way home!

All in all, the tour was less than glamourous--but fun nonetheless. To check out more photos from the Columbus trip, go to our Facebook page. While you're there, please join our group!

I'll be posting the video of our TV appearance here on the blog, so check back soon!

Book Signing News

Wednesday, 23 July 2008 13:59 by elenamauer

It's been too long since the Fifth Avenue B&N book signing, but luckily, we have these videos courtesy of Joselin's friend Gabe to remember it by.

Ah, now I remember what I wanted to say about it! Such a fun event. Joselin and I realized the day of the signing that we were expected to actually speak in front of everyone (not just sign our names and chat with people like we did at BEA) so we prepared a few passages to read. Yes, we did it about a half hour before the signing, but I think we chose well. One was from our "Boundaries, Respect and Privacy" chapter and the other was on handling sticky questions like "When are you getting married?" Both, I think, are topics people want to know about--and what makes our book unique.

So anyhow, there we were at the Barnes and Noble--the first ever B&N, I might add--and it was 6:00, the scheduled time for the book signing and we only had three people in the crowd. Even though I knew at least 10 of my friends told me they were coming, I was still a little freaked out, visualizing myself standing at the podium with three people sitting there yawning and staring at me. Kinda like the public speaking in your underwear nightmare. We stalled a bit, then once we got started talking, more and more people gathered. And actually, so many came that the B&N staffers kept bringing out more chairs to accomodate everyone. It was so exciting!

Plus, we sold out all their books except for three copies, which we autographed for the store. (So if you want a signed copy, you may be able to find one. Fifth Ave and 18th Street.) We even got complimented by the manager about what a great turnout we had. Thank you to everyone who attended! We had a fun afterparty too, once we corraled everyone to a local bar that wasn't pumping dance music or using strobe lights at 7:00 on a weekday, like the first one was. Note to self, next time better scope out the afterparty venue beforehand. Oh and there were cupcakes too. Extra thanks to whoever made those!

Next stop? Ohio. Look out Columbus because on Aug. 4, we'll be appearing on Good Day Columbus on Fox between 7 and 9 AM. Then, there will be another signing/reading that night at:

The University Barnes and Noble
1598 N High St
Columbus, OH 43201
(614) 247-2000

Please tune in--and stop by!

Our 15 Minutes Have Begun!

Sunday, 22 June 2008 14:05 by elenamauer
Joselin and I have had the most amazing week or so since the book's release. I, personally, headed to the bookstore the day it came out, camera phone poised ready to take the first pic of copies of the book on the shelves. But low and behold, my Borders had only one lone Good Girl's Guide! (Not sure whether that means people have been buying it, or that the store only stocked numero uno.) I was disappointed. I thought, no need to take a picture—that's what it looks like sitting on my shelf at home!

My day picked up later on when one of my friends called me from her local bookstore saying, "Elena, you're gonna think I'm crazy. I saw your book—and started crying!" Happy tears of course. Her store had five copies. Whoo hoo!
There were lots more congratulatory phone calls, emails and Facebook messages. (It's amazing to have so much support! Thanks everyone.) The best email I got was one from a friend who happened to be walking past the B&N on Fifth Avenue and 18th Street in New York and saw the book displayed in the window—with photos of Jos and me! Direct quote from the friend: "I didn't know you were famous!" Well, we're totally not. That was the one bookstore in the entire world that probably has the book in the window—because we're having a signing there on Thursday—but hey, I'll take it. Thank you B&N!

Oh, and after that email, I had to go check out that window. It was pretty awesome, all decorated with shiny stars. I can't believe people walking down Fifth Avenue will look in a display window and see us! Inside the store, they also had a table set up with more copies, and flyers (also with our pictures) for people to take. As I was walking through, I happened to see Paul Giamatti shopping for books—yes the guy from Sideways! I couldn't help but wonder whether he noticed the book! (What is it with this book and minor celeb sightings?)

Hilarious. Anyway, please come to our book signing on Thursday, June 26 at 6 pm—you might see Paul Giamatti. But at the very least, you'll see us, and we're ... almost ... famous...

We Love LA!

Saturday, 7 June 2008 12:34 by elenamauer

Our publishers jetted us off to LA to sign books at BEA, a huge book expo. Everyone seemed excited about The Good Girl’s Guide to Living in Sin and were even picking up copies for their sisters, friends and daughters!

We spotted some pretty cool authors, including Anne Rice, who ran out of copies of her latest book to sign for us, but seemed so sweet and apologetic. Also on our radar: Omarosa, one of the Skinny Bitch authors and the PC guy from the Mac commercials.  Okay, so those three aren’t exactly the biggest celebs out there, but we weren’t sticking around too long. We were dying to hit the town!

Plus, we had our dose of real celebrity spotting while we were strolling around Venice Beach. Paul Rudd and Jason Segel were being filmed for a movie about thirty feet from where we were meeting a friend for brunch. If we were home in New York, we probably would have breezed right past. But because we were out-of-towners we totally gawked and took pictures.

Oh, and one of the best things about BEA? The free books!

We had so many that we left some behind with our LA pals. But these ones made it on the plane and then back home with me.

Hmm... now what to read first...?
